Catchup
As we mentioned in the last blog, family (Sister-in-law and brother-in-law) joined us this week so it was a busy time since they had not been to Las Vegas or the Grand Canyon. So, what did we do?

Capo’s
This was a really cool restaurant and speakeasy. The building itself on the outside had no windows and it was hard to determine where the entrance was. When we found the door a man opened a hatch and spoke to us and then opened a door that had a phone booth on it instead of what looked like a real door. Inside, it was so dark, we had trouble seeing our way to the table and had to use cell phone flashlight to read the menu. The food was really good (except for Kathy’s lasagna). There was a singer singing tunes from the era. It was a unique experience.
Mad Apple
When you go to Las Vegas you really need to do a show. We chose a Cirque Du Soleil show, Mad Apple that was a comedy and had a really good time. The comedians were a little politically incorrect but entertaining. After the show we walked along the strip and watched the fountains at the Bellagio. Video below.
West Rim
We drove to the West Rim of the Grand Canyon on our way to our hotel. I don’t have words to describe the scenery and we were in awe of how the Canyon was created. Unfortunately, the pictures don’t really do it justice either. You just can’t capture the depth and colors no matter how great a photographer you are. I could have just sat for hours taking in the beauty and serenity of this place. We all walked the Sky Walk but do not have photos to prove this. That is my sister, Kathy and her husband, Marc in the pictures with us. It was great having them with us for the week. We then spent the night at the Red Feather Lodge.
South Rim
We spent the next day at the South Rim taking the shuttle bus from point to point. The altitude was making Marc and I uncomfortable but I learned just how much worse altitude sickness could get for me at Brian Head, Utah (our next stop). The pictures speak for themselves and again just can’t capture the true magnitude of the canyon.
Williams Arizona
This was a little, very old town on our way back to Vegas. They had a zipline over the parking lot of the visitor center. The zip line had a car on the top and the town was on the Historic RT 66. We keep running into RT 66 from time to time. Map Link
Hoover Dam
We took the tour of the Hoover Dam on the way back to Vegas also. The water level of Lake Mead is very low. The tour showing how it was made and how it works was really interesting and again we had beautiful weather. So far this week we would go from hot to cool depending on the elevation.
Cowboy
We had a great time taking a horseback ride at Red Rock Canyon. The horses were very familiar with the trail and that made it easier for us. We did the 2 hour Rim Ride that started at 9AM. They have other rides too and if we go back would probably try the early evening one that included dinner. They talked about about stopping for a photo opportunity and expected the usual sales photo of $10 or so. None of the sort, they used YOUR camera once they put you into your family groups. We highly recommend this ride.
BattleBots
The last night in Vegas we decided to go to BattleBots thinking it was the one on TV. It was fun to watch the robots battle each other but felt a bit ripped off to find out this was really a re-enactment using actors who pretended to be the ones that built and operated the bots. Instead there was a few professionals that controlled the bots in every match. Reminded me of professional wrestling – lots of overdramatic hype before each battle. This was Destruct-a-thon version of BattleBots, not what you see on TV, to fill seats until the real season starts again.
The next morning we all packed up and took Kathy and Marc to the airport and we moved on to our next stop.
We are now moving on to Brian Head, UT
Great post, K and G! We had such a great time, with beautiful weather all week!
It was a great week. The good weather has left us. For the first time since we left Fort Lauderdale April 3rd on the Panama Canal we had rain today.
