Avalon, Catalina Island – Day 2

Woke up late and missed breakfast. Updated 4/19/23

As you can see on the heading we caught up on some ZZZZZzzz’s. We have arranged an excursion or two (Bison Expedition & Casino Behind the Scenes tour) through the front desk and then found a small local coffee shop for a late breakfast. We also walked to the golf cart rental place and got the 411 on renting a cart. As we were too late today at the cart rental place, we will be there tomorrow at 9am if the weather looks good.

Alma and Von’s supermarket:
Alma is a woman about my age and was working as a cashier at the only grocery store on the island. She clearly has a disability of some kind, so I am not making fun of Alma. I actually felt sorry for her as the store got busier and there seemed to be issues at every check out, Alma was very friendly and was taking care of a woman and her young daughter in front of us. She scanned the lollipop that the little girl was whining about and handed it to her. She then went back to scanning items. The scanning process went like this, pick up item from the left, raise it over her head and put it down on the right side past the scanner, swipe it from right to left to scan, pick it up over her head and put it back down on the right side of the scanner to bag. This was done instead of picking the item up on the left and scanning it to the right. Not only did poor Alma waste her energy with the over the head with the item twice move but she also was taking quite a bit longer to scan a small number of items while the line lengthened at every register (seemed everyone was having an issue with the checkout process that day). Meanwhile the manager was trying to be helpful and bag the groceries coming off of Alma’s line but her FACE! She was clearly having as much of an issue with her face as I have with mine when Alma ran off to get a lollipop like the one, she scanned and left her register, ran back with it and I guess she didn’t think she had scanned it, scanned it and then ran off to put it back again leaving her register and her managers face was absolutely priceless! Went back to Von’s today to pick something up and Alma wasn’t there. I hope she didn’t lose her job, but I didn’t see any of the same cashiers there today.

Here are the Photos from today. I will let them tell the story of another cruise ship in port, what the streets look like when it disembarks, views of our private space, a motorbike without an engine etc. Oh, nearly forgot, golf carts.

  1. Beautiful! Good for Mr. Wrigley!
How did you discover/choose Catalina Island as a stop?

    1. The cruise ended in LA and we didn’t want to see LA. A friend had told us about Catalina awhile ago and what I researched online made it clear we needed to come here.
