Time to get out of Delaware

We avoided tourist traps and theme parks and spent time by the pool in our SeaWorld one-bedroom apartment.

Leu House and Gardens, Orlando, Florida

History

The Leu House Museum is a historic treasure nestled within the Harry P. Leu Gardens in Orlando, Florida. Built in 1888, this charming Victorian-style home has been meticulously preserved to showcase 19th and 20th-century architectural styles. The house was originally owned by four different families over its lifetime, each contributing to its rich history.

The first owners, Angeline and David W. Mizell, settled the property in 1858 and farmed cotton, corn, and sugar cane. David Mizell, the only sheriff of Orange County to die in the line of duty, was tragically murdered in 18701.

In 1902, Duncan Pell and Helen Gardner, a silent film star and the first woman to own her own production company, took ownership of the property. They added charm and nostalgia to the estate, which was named LaBelle by the next owners, Joseph and Martha Woodward, in 19061.

The Leu family purchased the property in 19361. Harry P. Leu, a successful industrial supply company owner, and his wife Mary Jane, traveled extensively and brought back plants and seeds to create the beautiful gardens that bear witness to their legacy. The Leus gifted the property to the City of Orlando in 1961, transforming it into a museum and public garden.

Visitors to the Leu House Museum can explore beautifully preserved rooms, each telling the story of the families who lived there. The museum is open for guided tours Tuesday through Sunday, offering a glimpse into the past and the origins of the gardens.
