Heading to the Ferry
Sunday was another beautiful day for a four-hour drive to the ferry at Mackinaw. We completed the trip, including lunch, with time to spare. We saw the cruise ship Hanseatic Inspiration on Lake Michigan and dinosaurs!

Grand Hotel
After stepping off the 4:30 pm ferry, we were on Mackinac Island. We took the Grand Hotel horse and carriage and finally arrived at Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, MI. This carriage trip was $8 per person.
We had a quick look around the hotel Sunday evening and had a drink at the Gate House, which is owned and run by the hotel. Nice staff. Chocolate on the pillow. Real keys. I am unsure how the real keys will fit in with the collection of hotel keys.
Apparently, I slept through the couple in the room above us making whoopee during the night, according to Karen!
So why are we here on Mackinac Island and at the Grand Hotel? Karen watched the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time, filmed in and around the Grand Hotel and Mackinac, and this place has always been on her bucket list. Another first for us both and an item checked off of her bucket list.

Memorial Day
On Monday, we went into town to look around. We stopped for coffee and a muffin at Lucky Bean Coffee House. We can recommend this coffee store. We visited the Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House & Insect World. It was small but well-run. A late lunch and early dinner were taken at the Gate House, sitting outside on the patio under an umbrella as the weather was fantastic again.
We did not eat in the main dining room at the hotel. This required $$$$ and a blazer and tie, which I did not have on this road trip. Attending dinner at the main dining room also meant eating late.
Gifs/Loops – Butterflies
We had to call maintenance back at the hotel as our 1980s AC failed and made serious noise. The nice helpful maintenance guy (Tom, I think) but not the HAVC guy, supplied us with a portable unit that has cooled the room much better than the failed unit.
We had a game of Corn holes later in the afternoon. Karen Won by one!

Tomorrow – Tuesday
We will leave Mackinac Island on the 11:30 am ferry heading to Gaylord for a few days. The road trip will be ending soon.
