Panama Canal

A day at sea – Day 6

The day started early, 5:45am waiting for coffee and croissants to be delivered. The reason we are on this cruise is to get to the west coast to start our road trip without the five hour flight from PHL. The clock has gone back two hours so far. Only one more hour to go back before we get to LA.

I am not going to say much about today except it was fascinating using the old locks. A well oiled machine. We will let our pictures and videos tell the story. Watch out for the following:

  • Pirates
  • Catamaran
  • Car transporter, Morning Caroline
  • Mules (Small trains that center the ship in the lock. They do not move the ship. The ship moves under it’s own power.)
  • How the ship overhangs the control buildings!
  • Mayhem on the road watching us enter the lock.
  • Gold Hill. The name was to entice workers back in 1913. No gold has ever been found.
  • Titan, maintenance crane.
  • Costa Deliziosa. Both ships greeted each other. Watch the video.
  • Dredging vessels. The canal is constantly being dredged.
  • The huge cargo ship that has to use the new locks.
  • Viking Octantis cruise ship in port Colon.
  • Sailboat (motor powered) playing chicken with cruise ship. Captain sounded his horn but the boat did not flinch!

Captain Fred is a comedian as well as a good captain. As we exited the canal on the Pacific side he updated us on the day. He told us he received the invoice to the transit through the canal and is looking for donations to pay $395K! Since he had been on his feet 5:30am he was now going to his cabin and put his feet up on his desk. 😂

Photos

Andrew was touching the wall! We met Andrew and Janet (Janel took the photo and allowed us to use it) at the Chefs Table a couple of nights later. Andrew is tall like 6’11” tall (if I remember correctly) and has a slight advantage over Karen in the wall touching contest.
